Do you take ’small’ jobs?

August 5th, 2006

Do you take small jobs?

I know many web designers who, one they get a decent amount of experience, choose to only take clients from which they can make say $2000 or more for a site.

I know that I work for one that simply will not even talk to you unless the site is going to make him about $5000 or so.

The question I ask is why?

Why alienate a very large portion of your market by refusing to work for anything under a certain level?

I am in the process of finishing a small site that I will be charging the client about $600 for my work.

It sure didn’t take that long to complete nor was it very difficult work.

So what is the purpose?

I look at it this way: if that client ever needs future work done on their site, they are going to use me, thus I make more money. That client, if satisified with my work, will most likely recommend me to other friends or business associates. Now, will all of those associates be ’small’ scale sites? Probably not.

So, as I look back at this past week to see what I have accomplished, I realized that I made a little extra money, provided a nice site for a client, and hopefully spread my name out a little further in town as someone who does quality work, responds to their questions quickly and delivers on time.

So for those of you out there who turn down these small clients, I say thanks for growing my client list and spreading my name out as someone who does good work. I appreciate it!
