Something for Nothing?
July 20th, 2006So have you done any work for free?
Last night I was contacted by Rex of BloggerSkills.com and he needed a small graphic made for his site. He got my name from Lee Dodd. I was happy to do it for him - for free no less.
What did this get me? I lost some work time to make the graphic and to chat with Rex - about an hour or so.
But the likelyhood that Rex may choose to come to me in the future when he has a large job that he needs assistance on (and will be a paying job at that) increased by my willingness to do a favor for someone.
It is also called networking. Both Rex and I extended our network of contacts tonight. Who knows when I might need a favor from Rex.
Making contacts while working online is key to being sucessful long term. It is hard for some people. I know it is for me. Luckily, it might be easier doing this over the web than it is in person.
I started in the web design business by doing a couple of small sites for free. It got my feet wet in trying to learn how to work with a client and it gave me a portfolio. After those initial sites, I was able to start charging for my services and eventually I am able to do what I do today.
So, is it good to do something for nothing? Absolutely!
