PHP and ‘This Directory is Invalid’

July 21st, 2006

I ran into this error a few weeks ago and had a hard time finding any sort of answer as to what is actually causing the problem.

Problem: I am running IIS (webserver) and PHP on my laptop as my development environment. As I click on a link to see how the page is developing along, I get an error:

Now this was just a basic link - there wasn’t even anything PHP related on the page yet so I was very confused. I googled the error and found a ton of posts in forums about other people experiencing the same thing, but no solution was ever provided. I finally found only one that provided any sort of answer. So here is how you fix the problem:

1) Open up your IIS Admin panel
2) Right-click on the Virtual Directory where you are experiencing the problem

3) Scroll down and choose the .php extension by double-clicking on it.

4) Look in the lower left corner and make sure the ‘check file exists’ box is checked.

5) Choose OK and go back out to your local site and refresh the page and the problem should be fixed.

Now it seems that this problem is a result of being logged in as a user in Windows XP and not as the administrator for whatever reason that happens because my user account is in the administrators group. Seems like another one of those strange windows problems but at least this is easily fixed.
